Winner

The Finnish violinist Pekka Kuusisto wins the Nordic Council Music Prize. This has just been announced at the Nordic Council Prize Gala in Oslo
.
Pekka Kuusisto (born 1976) is a violinist in the absolute elite and with as much unique creativity as musicality, says the Adjudication Committee in their motivation:

”Pekka Kuusisto moves with total freedom and great curiosity in a broad musical landscape where he finds completely new aspects of familiar motifs. Fearless, he explores an unknown terrain, but also invites the audience and the other players into a creative interaction. As a composer, arranger and artistic leader he creates inspiring contexts, particularly within the framework of folk music. Pekka Kuusisto is a strong performer who masters all techniques and expression - from the extreme virtuoso to the simple and moving.”

The Nordic Council Music Prize is worth DKK 350,000 and was presented by last year's winner, Anna Thorvaldsdóttir, at a gala celebration at the Opera House in Oslo on Wednesday evening.

Pekka Kuusisto, violin

Pekka Kuusisto is a "spelman" with an education in classical violin. A schedule with as much variation as possible is where he feels the most comfortable. For Pekka, performing the violin concerto repertoire and directing chamber orchestras need a counterweight of electronic music and improvisation. The traditional music of Finland and the Nordic countries serves as a source of inspiration for Kuusisto, and his approach to the violin and performing in general has changed substantially since he became more involved with folk music and its performers. Pekka Kuusisto also writes music, mostly for small ensembles where he is one of the performers. He has recorded duo albums of original material with the accordionist Johanna Juhola, as well as singer and lyricist Paula Vesala. Pekka has recently collaborated with artists such as Valgeir Sigurdsson, Nightwish, Maja Ratkje, Frode Haltli, Olli Mustonen, Nico Muhly, Angela Hewitt, The National and the Oslo Philharmonic.

Pekka Kuusisto, violin

The Guardian
